Preparations

In exactly 24 days we will begin a "once in a life-time journey," traveling through the southern African countries of South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. We begin in South Africa from Cape Town in the southwest. Here, we'll explore Cape Town's natural scenic backdrop: Table Mountain; visit Robben Island, the political prison housing Nelson Mandela in the Apartheid years; and travel the Cape Peninsula to stand on Africa's southwestern most point: the Cape of Good Hope. We'll then travel along the southern coast via the scenic Garden Route. We'll stay in Knysna and visit Storm's River and the coastal forests. In time, we'll make our way to Addo Elephant and Kruger National Parks, visit the Victorian-era coastal town of Port Elizabeth and travel along the escarpment of the worlds third largest canyon, Blyde River Canyon. Departing South Africa, we'll then travel to the mighty Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, to gaze upon that Great Wonder of the Natural World: Victoria Falls.

We return to Johannesburg and here, Becky and I will part. She'll return to the States and I'll stay in Africa for another two weeks. After Becky's sad departure, I'll make my way to Lesotho for a 3 day (guided) cultural excursion staying among villagers in the Drakensberg Mountains. I'll then head to Pretoria to meet up with colleagues from George Mason University. Here, I'll begin participating in a study abroad program at the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town. All told, Becky will spend two weeks in southern Africa and I, just over four weeks.

Planning and preparations have been underway for some time now. But as the days seem to fly by, the final push to lock in the itinerary brings with it new excitement with each reservation made, each decision finalized.

It is our hope to post regularly to this site throughout our trip, as technology allows. But until our May 7th departure, stop by every so often for updates on the preparations and join us in the building anticipation of our great Odyssey!

P.S. This is also a bit of an experiment in mobile technology as we plan to use iPhones & iPads apps to update this site. Of course, this all depends on being able to find wireless hotspots. Can't afford those roaming charges! We'll begin here in the States so that by the time we hit the ground, we'll be experts with the app. Wish us luck!
