Planning Lesotho

One of the biggest planning challenges, for me, has been to come up with a plan for the weekend after Becky departs. To be able to return to work the following Monday, Becky will need to leave the previous Friday. Since I don't meet up with my group until late Monday evening, that leaves me a long weekend to find something to do.

Initally, I had thought I would travel to Victoria Falls, but after thinking about it, I realized that part of the adventure would be much better if shared with Becky. So, we rearranged the schedule a bit - and, wah-la - our final three days are at the Falls. On Friday May 20th, we'll return to Johannesburg, where Beck will catch her flight home.

Since I'm at the airport, I figured my options were wide open. Going over the trip wish list, I noted that we weren't able to fit into the journey a trip up the Sani Pass. The pass is one of the most precipitous roads in southern Africa, winding it way up the Drakensberg mountains. On the other side of the Pass lies the border between South Africa and the mountain country of Lesotho.

To get to the Sani, from Johannesburg, I would fly to the southern coastal city of Durban. From there, Drakensberg National Park is approximately 2 and 1/2 hours west. Four-by-four excursions up the Sani Pass are operated at the base of the mountain, near the small town of Underberg.

Though traveling up the Pass and into Lesotho certainly sounded exciting, I really wanted more; I wanted to find a way to - SAFELY - explore Lesotho. I'm adventurous, but I'm not stupid. I really didn't want to travel alone in the remote countryside. After some research, though, I found an outfit called Drakensberg Adventures which offers a 2-day excursion up the Sani Pass and into Lesotho. This "Village Excursion" then takes the traveler to a small village where a tour of village life is given. The traveler is then introduced to their host family who will provide their overnight accommodations. The program is described in detail on the outfitters site: http://www.sanilodge.co.za/DAovernight.htm

I think I may have found my Lesotho excursion!
